Reddit Alerts: How to Get Notified of New Posts on Any Subreddit

By Emily Fenton

Updated April 30, 2026

TL;DR: Reddit doesn't send notifications when a new post appears on a subreddit. The "New" sort shows the latest posts when you visit, but there are no automatic alerts. To get notified the moment a new post goes up on any subreddit or user profile, you need a third-party tool. Visualping monitors any Reddit page and sends an email alert when a new post appears. Free to start, no browser extension or app required.

How to set up Reddit alerts with Visualping

Setup takes about two minutes.

Step 1. Go to the subreddit you want to monitor and sort it by "New." The URL will look like this: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/new/

Step 2. Paste the URL into Visualping and click Go. The subreddit page loads in the viewport.

Step 3. Click and drag to select the area of the page where new posts appear: the main post list below the subreddit header. Selecting just this region means you get alerted to new posts only, not every other page change (vote counts, ad rotations, sidebar updates).

Step 4. Set your check frequency. For most subreddits, hourly is sufficient. For fast-moving communities or time-sensitive monitoring, choose a shorter interval.

Step 5. Enter your email address and click Start Monitoring. Visualping sends a confirmation email to finish account setup. After that, it runs in the background and emails you the moment a new post appears.

What you can monitor on Reddit with Visualping

Visualping watches the rendered page (the same view a visitor sees) rather than Reddit's API or RSS output. This means it catches changes that feed-based tools miss if Reddit throttles or restructures its API.

On any Reddit page, you can monitor:

  • Subreddits: get alerted when a new post appears in any community, sorted by New
  • User profiles: track when a specific Reddit user publishes a new post or comment
  • Pinned posts: detect when moderators swap out announcements or rules
  • Wiki pages: monitor subreddit wiki edits and rule changes
  • Megathread updates: track changes to a pinned megathread as it evolves

Use cases

Brand and reputation monitoring. Paste the URL of a subreddit where your product or company gets discussed: an industry community, a niche interest sub, or a product category feed. New posts in these communities often surface customer feedback and complaints before they reach review sites. Pair a subreddit monitor with keyword monitoring on your own site to cover both sides.

Competitive research. Track a competitor's brand subreddit or a community where their product is discussed. Users post candid feature requests, workarounds, and comparisons that rarely appear in official channels. A daily alert on r/competitor keeps you informed without manual checking.

Community management. If you moderate or participate in an active subreddit, a Visualping alert means you see every new post as it goes up, useful for moderation queues and for catching time-sensitive threads early.

Tracking specific users. Follow a journalist, researcher, investor, or industry expert by monitoring their profile page sorted by New. You get an email whenever they post something, without needing to follow them on Reddit or visit the site.

Other ways to get Reddit alerts

RSS feeds. Reddit provides an RSS feed for every subreddit at reddit.com/r/subredditname/.rss. Subscribe in a reader like Feedly or Inoreader to get new posts in your feed. Free and reliable, but you check your reader rather than receive a push alert.

IFTTT. Connect Reddit's RSS to email or push notifications through an IFTTT automation. More setup steps than Visualping, but works if you already use IFTTT for other workflows.

Reddit mobile app. The app sends push notifications for communities you follow, but Reddit's algorithm controls which posts surface in those notifications, and you cannot reliably receive an alert for every new post on a given subreddit.

The common limitation of all three: they depend on Reddit's API and feed infrastructure, which Reddit has restricted or restructured multiple times. Visualping reads the page directly and is unaffected by API access changes.

Frequently asked questions

Does Reddit have built-in alerts for new posts?

No. Reddit does not send notifications when a new post is published on a subreddit. The app and website let you sort by "New" to see recent posts, but there is no automatic alert for new activity in a specific community. For automatic notifications, you need a third-party tool like Visualping or an RSS reader.

Can I get email alerts for new posts on any subreddit?

Yes. Visualping monitors any public Reddit URL and sends an email alert when the page changes. Paste the subreddit URL sorted by "New" into Visualping, select the post list area, set a check frequency, and enter your email. You get an alert each time a new post appears. The free plan monitors up to 5 pages at hourly intervals.

How often does Visualping check Reddit for new posts?

Check frequency is set by you when you create the monitor. The free plan checks once per hour. Paid plans allow 15-minute, 5-minute, or 2-minute intervals starting at $10/month. For most subreddits, hourly is enough. For fast-moving communities or time-sensitive monitoring, shorter intervals are available.

Can I monitor a specific Reddit user for new posts?

Yes. Go to the user's profile page on Reddit, sort by "New," and paste the URL into Visualping. You get an email alert whenever the user publishes a new post. The same process works for monitoring their Comments tab if you want to track comment activity instead.

Is Visualping free for Reddit monitoring?

Yes. The free plan monitors up to 5 pages at hourly check frequency, enough to track a handful of subreddits or user profiles. Paid plans start at $10/month for more pages and higher check frequencies.
