Wayback Machine Alternatives: 12 Ways to Save, Find or Track Web Pages (2026)
Updated October 29, 2026

The best Wayback Machine alternatives depend on the job. To save a copy of a page today, consider Perma.cc for citations, Ghostarchive for a free public snapshot, or SingleFile for a file on your own computer. To get alerted to future changes detected on scheduled checks, use Visualping.
Older lists also include services that have retired or stopped accepting new captures: Memento Time Travel, Conifer, WebCite and Google Cache. See their current status before choosing one.

Disclosure: Visualping is our product. It monitors future changes on selected pages and keeps a limited change history. Perma.cc focuses on citations, Browsertrix on scheduled web archiving, and Pagefreezer and MirrorWeb on records-management workflows. A monitoring or archiving product cannot guarantee that a particular record will meet your legal requirements. Visualping's history starts when monitoring begins, with three months of history by default and one year on Business accounts.

Why people look for a Wayback Machine alternative
The Internet Archive announced its one-trillion-page milestone in October 2025. The Wayback Machine remains a useful first stop for an old version of a page, but the capture you need may be missing.
Its official help explains that password protection, inaccessible URLs, owner exclusions and some JavaScript behavior can prevent capture or replay. It also warns that an archived page can contain missing assets or links that lead to a different capture date.
A page's capture date establishes when that version was archived. It does not establish the exact moment the publisher changed it. If you need future records, choose a capture schedule and review the saved output while the source is still available.
Save Page Now is a request to capture a specific page. The Internet Archive's help says that this does not enroll the URL in future crawls. A team that needs recurring checks, private records or a review workflow should assess those requirements separately.
How to find an old snapshot in a web archive today
- Search the Wayback Machine for the original URL and inspect the available capture dates.
- Search other public archives, including Ghostarchive and Archive.today, if the version is missing. Check the integrity caveat for Archive.today below.
- Try a national archive for government and cultural sites. The British Library announced the UK Web Archive's restoration on October 26, 2026. You can search from anywhere, but most playback requires a Legal Deposit Library reading room, and some newer material is still unavailable.
- If no suitable copy exists, save the live page using one of the tools below. To follow future changes, set up a free change alert and check that the monitor captures the content you need.
Visualping to track changes and keep a dated snapshot history
Visualping checks selected pages on a schedule. When a check detects a change that meets your alert settings, the change email includes before-and-after screenshots and an AI summary. The dashboard also lets you review detected changes.
Default AI Mode monitors content and images while ignoring CSS-only styling changes. You can monitor the whole page or select an area. An optional “Alert me when” prompt guides the Important classification. To limit delivery to Important changes, confirm that “Alert me only when the AI condition is met” and your chosen notification channels are enabled.
Cloud checks can run as often as every two minutes on Personal 10K and Business plans. Free has a 60-minute minimum cloud interval. The free Chrome extension also supports one-minute local checks while your browser is open; local checks depend on that browser running.
Email, webhooks and API access are available on all plans. SMS starts at Personal 5K. Native Slack, Microsoft Teams and Google Sheets integrations require Business.
Pricing: the Free plan allows five active monitors and 150 checks per month. Personal 1K costs $14/month billed monthly or $120/year, equivalent to $10/month, for ten monitors and 1,000 monthly checks. Business 20K starts at $140/month billed monthly or $1,200/year, equivalent to $100/month.
Budget checks separately from monitor capacity. Five monitors checked once daily use 150 checks in 30 days and 155 in 31 days. Failed checks also consume the allowance. Monitoring pauses when checks run out until the allowance resets or you upgrade.
History starts when monitoring starts. Visualping's plan documentation specifies three months of history by default and one year for Business accounts. Review records before retention expires. Changes that occur and disappear between successful checks may be missed.
Note on timestamps: Review the check history in the dashboard or Timeline View to see when Visualping checked the page. A screenshot's appearance alone does not establish its capture time. A Script action can modify a page before capture, but a custom date banner should not be treated as independent proof of authenticity.
This workflow can help teams review competitor pricing, regulations, policies or product pages, and help journalists tracking sources inspect detected updates.
Perma.cc to save a citation link

Perma.cc is developed and maintained by the Harvard Library Innovation Lab at Harvard Law School Library. You submit a URL and receive a citation link to a preserved record, with archived-page and screenshot views. Review the record after capture to confirm that it contains the intended content.
Pricing: new users can preserve ten links as a trial. Eligible academic users affiliated with a library registrar and state or federal courts can receive free, unlimited use. Individual monthly plans provide 10 links for $10, 100 for $25 or 500 for $100. One-time packs cost $15 for 10 links, $30 for 100 or $125 for 500. Unused monthly allowances do not roll over. Organizations can request group pricing.
Perma also documents an API. Its capture target is the submitted page, rather than all the pages linked from it. Its FAQ describes long-term preservation plans but explicitly declines to guarantee preservation forever.
Ghostarchive to save a free public copy of a page or video
Ghostarchive saves public snapshots containing images and framed content, and supports video capture from some websites. Its documentation describes scripted ReplayWeb.page playback and a separate no-JavaScript replay system; a particular capture may work better in one than the other.
Pricing: free, with no account system.
Its published limits are a stored page smaller than 50MB and video up to 360p that fits below 100MB. Livestreams and videos longer than 30 minutes may fail. Capture time depends on the queue and page complexity. Password-protected pages and pages requiring form submission are outside its documented collection scope. Inspect the archived result before relying on it.
Archive.today to save a quick public snapshot

Archive.today, also known through domains such as archive.is and archive.ph, provides on-demand public snapshots and archive search. The captured homepage above illustrates its submission and search interface.
There is a material integrity caveat. English Wikipedia's own guidance says the community decided in February 2026 to stop using the service after concerns about a denial-of-service attack and evidence of altered archived pages. This establishes Wikipedia's decision and stated reasons; it is not a court ruling.
For a citation or consequential record, consider Perma.cc or another archive and compare the saved content with the source. Keep an independent copy rather than relying on an Archive.today link alone.
SingleFile to save a page as one file on your computer
SingleFile is a free, open-source extension for saving a page with its images, styles and fonts in one HTML file. The file can be opened offline. The project supports several browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari, and provides a command-line tool.
The extension can save selected tabs or all tabs in one operation and can autosave pages after they load. Local download is the default; optional destinations include Google Drive and GitHub. Its settings also include a proof-of-existence option using the saved file's hash.
Pricing: free software under the AGPL license. Review a saved file to confirm that the content and interactions you need survived capture. A saved copy or hash does not by itself establish that the original page was accurate.
ArchiveWeb.page to save interactive pages as you browse
ArchiveWeb.page is Webrecorder's free, open-source browser extension and desktop application for recording web content as you browse. It can preserve interactions that you perform during the recording and produces downloadable archives for replay.
The extension requires Chrome or another Chromium-based browser. The desktop app is a separate option. Check the replay after recording, especially for interactive pages, and retain only content you are authorized to access and preserve.
For automated whole-site crawls, Webrecorder points users to Browsertrix.
Browsertrix to archive whole sites on a schedule
Browsertrix is Webrecorder's platform for browser-based web archiving. It supports recurring crawls and browser profiles for authenticated sessions. It also provides capture-quality review tools and downloadable, digitally signed WACZ archives.
Digital signing helps check the integrity of the archive output. Test capture and replay on your target sites; signing does not guarantee that every page or interaction was captured successfully.
Pricing: a seven-day Starter trial, then $30/month. Standard is $60/month and Plus is $120/month. Starter includes 180 execution minutes per month, 100GB storage and up to 2,000 pages per crawl. Pro and Enterprise have custom terms billed annually. Self-hosted open-source software is available, with infrastructure and maintenance costs to consider.
Compare crawl minutes, storage and pages per crawl before choosing a plan.
ArchiveBox to run your own Wayback Machine

This is a previous homepage capture. Its download and usage counters are not current measurements.
ArchiveBox is open-source software for running an archive on your own machine or server. It accepts URL lists and imports such as bookmarks or RSS feeds. Depending on the enabled extractors and successful capture, it can save HTML, PDFs, screenshots, media, text and WARC files.
The project documents a command line and web interface, with a REST API labeled alpha. Follow the installation instructions for the version you deploy rather than assuming every packaging method has the same release.
Pricing: free software under the MIT license. You pay for hosting and storage and maintain the installation.
Review its privacy and cookie-handling settings before archiving private content. The current README says submission to archive.org is enabled by default and can be disabled for local-only use.
Stillio to archive scheduled screenshots of the same pages

Stillio takes screenshots on a fixed schedule and stores them in a timeline. It offers capture locations in more than 30 countries, custom JavaScript and CSS, and synchronization options including Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox and webhooks. This can suit teams reviewing competitor sites or landing pages at recurring intervals.
Pricing: a 14-day trial, then Snap Shot at $29/month for up to five pages captured daily, weekly or monthly. Hot Shot is $79/month for 25 pages; Big Shot is $199/month for 100. Top Shot starts at $299/month, with unlimited page URLs and intervals as short as five minutes, but includes only 6,000 screenshots per month. Additional screenshots cost $0.05 each.
All plans list 36 months of screenshot retention while the subscription remains active. The pricing page offers a 10% education and nonprofit discount. Screenshot files preserve an image of the page; test whether that format is sufficient for your records.
Pagefreezer for compliance archives and audit trails

The screenshot shows the vendor's marketing claims at capture time, including its customer count.
Pagefreezer markets website and social-media archiving for records-management, audit and litigation workflows. Its website-archiving documentation describes digital signatures, cryptographic hashes, retention policies and exports. These are capabilities to assess against your compliance-monitoring requirements, rather than a guarantee that any record satisfies a particular rule.
It also offers website change reports and email notifications, plus WebPreserver for evidence collection during investigations.
Pricing: quote-based. The current pricing page advertises a starting price of $1,500 annually, dependent on the scope of services. Confirm the capture sources, retention, export needs and review workflow in the quote.
The service captures configured content prospectively; it is not a general public index of arbitrary historical pages.
MirrorWeb for an audit-ready archive of your own sites
MirrorWeb offers website archiving for governments, brands and financial firms. Its documentation describes WARC records, write-once-read-many storage, dynamic-content capture, full-text search and version comparisons. Evaluate those capabilities against the records your team needs for audits.
Its Web Changes feature compares captured page text and surfaces additions, removals and updates for review. The documentation explicitly includes organizations with responsibilities over websites they do not directly control, so ownership of every target website is not a universal requirement.
Pricing: contact sales to scope the service.
Review capture frequency, export procedures and retention terms with the vendor. An archive product's compliance positioning does not establish that your particular deployment meets every applicable requirement.
Ahrefs Page Inspect to track how a page changed for SEO

The signup count visible in this previous homepage capture is not a current measurement.
Ahrefs Page Inspect shows how a page's stored HTML and text changed over time. You can compare available versions when investigating SEO changes, such as revised titles, headings or copy. The sequence of a content change and a ranking change does not, on its own, prove causation.
Pricing: Page Inspect is listed from Lite at $129/month billed monthly. Standard is $249/month and Advanced is $449/month, also billed monthly. Ahrefs has other plans; these are the named tiers relevant to this comparison.
Plan history limits and available stored versions affect what you can inspect. A history allowance does not mean every page has a capture for every date. For future checks of selected pages, consider SEO change monitoring.
Discontinued tools and what to use instead
Check the status of older recommendations before trying to create a new archive.
| Tool | Current status or operator notice | Use instead |
|---|---|---|
| Memento Time Travel | In August 2025, its operator announced a sunset or handoff by the end of September 2025. The old hosted endpoint was unavailable during this review. This concerns the hosted service, not the Memento protocol. | Search individual archives directly |
| Conifer | Rhizome scheduled the end of capture and editing for May 2026. Its October 16 update postponed the later tombstone-interface transition until year-end; existing collections remain the focus. | ArchiveWeb.page for manual recording or Browsertrix for scheduled crawls |
| WebCite | Its current homepage says it is not accepting new archiving requests; previously saved snapshots can still be accessed and cited. | Perma.cc for new citations |
| Google Cache | Google's September 24, 2024 documentation update says the cache: search operator no longer works. | Search a web archive for an existing capture or save the live page |
Archive.ph and archive.is alternatives
Archive.today, archive.is and archive.ph are related domains of the same service. Choose an alternative based on the record you need:
- For another public snapshot, try Ghostarchive or the Wayback Machine.
- For a citation workflow, consider Perma.cc. For managed records and review, assess Pagefreezer.
- To save content locally, use SingleFile or ArchiveWeb.page, with sharing settings appropriate to the content.
- For future change detection, Visualping can check selected pages on a schedule.
How to choose a Wayback Machine alternative
Start with the question you're trying to answer.
What did this page say in the past?
Check the Wayback Machine, then search Archive.today and Ghostarchive directly. For SEO history of a page Ahrefs has crawled, use Ahrefs Page Inspect.
I need a copy of this page right now
Use Perma.cc if the copy will be cited, Ghostarchive or Archive.today for a quick public snapshot, and SingleFile or ArchiveWeb.page for a private copy.
I need to know when this page changes
Use Visualping for scheduled checks of selected pages and configured change alerts. Pagefreezer and MirrorWeb also offer change-review capabilities within their archiving products. To start with Visualping in your browser, see how to monitor website changes in Chrome.
I need records that hold up with regulators or in court
Assess Pagefreezer and MirrorWeb for managed records workflows, and Browsertrix for signed archive outputs. Have the people responsible for the matter confirm the required capture method, retention, authentication and export format before relying on a record.
I want to own the whole archive
Run ArchiveBox on your own hardware or self-host Browsertrix. Plan for backups, updates, access controls and replay testing.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free alternative to the Wayback Machine?
Ghostarchive provides free public snapshots. SingleFile, ArchiveWeb.page and ArchiveBox provide free open-source software; self-hosting can still incur costs. Perma.cc offers ten trial links and eligible academic and court access. Visualping's Free plan supports five active monitors sharing 150 monthly checks.
Why is the Wayback Machine not working?
A missing capture can mean the URL was never crawled, could not be accessed, or was excluded. An unavailable service is a different problem. Check another archive for the version you need and inspect its capture date and completeness.
What happened to Archive.today?
English Wikipedia deprecated Archive.today and related domains in February 2026. Its published guidance cites concerns about a denial-of-service attack and evidence of altered archived pages. For a consequential citation, verify the content against another source and keep an independent copy.
Is it legal to use archive.ph?
The answer depends on the jurisdiction, the content and whether you are viewing, copying or redistributing it. For a specific legal use, ask qualified counsel and review applicable rights and service terms. The availability of an archived copy does not itself establish permission to reuse it.
What replaced Memento Time Travel?
The operator announced plans to sunset or hand off the hosted Time Travel service by the end of September 2025. You can search individual archives directly, including the Wayback Machine and Ghostarchive, or try a national archive for government and cultural sites. The Memento protocol is distinct from that hosted search service.
Which Wayback Machine alternative is best for legal evidence?
Pagefreezer and MirrorWeb offer records-management capabilities, and Perma.cc provides a citation workflow. Choose against the requirements of the specific matter. Product claims about signatures, hashes or storage do not guarantee admissibility or regulatory compliance.
Can I get alerts when a website changes?
Yes. Visualping checks selected pages and can notify you when a check detects a change that meets the monitor's alert settings. Pagefreezer and MirrorWeb also document change-monitoring and review features. Confirm the schedule, enabled channels and retention you need.
How do I archive an entire website?
Consider Browsertrix for automated crawls, ArchiveBox for a self-hosted archive, or a managed archiving service. Define the URLs, crawl depth, authenticated content and capture limits, then test replay. Saving a single URL does not establish that all linked pages and assets were archived.
